A community initiative launched at High Green Methodist Church in Sheffield has exceeded all expectations in its first year, attracting growing numbers of residents seeking connection, conversation and a welcoming space.
3C’s — Coffee, Cake and Companionship — was created to offer a welcoming space for people who didn’t quite fit into the village’s existing clubs and groups. There were lunch clubs, sports and hobby sessions, but nowhere to simply drop in, sit down and enjoy the company of others without commitment or cost. It was hoped a handful of visitors might attend the first session, instead, 34 people walked through the doors. This number has continued to rise, with 51 people joining the May gathering and a record 58 attending on Yorkshire Day.
Regular visitors say they come for more than just a good cuppa. Many describe 3C’s as a place where they feel “welcomed, accepted and safe”, and organisers have noticed an increase in confidence among those who come. People who once arrived hesitantly now move easily between tables, chatting with others as though among longâ€'standing friends.
The sessions are deliberately lowâ€'pressure. Visitors can enjoy a quiet drink, join in conversation or simply sit and relax. The nowâ€'famous bacon sandwiches remain a firm favourite, while others appreciate the chance for a listening ear or a moment of prayer in the church sanctuary. Although faith is never pushed, gentle conversations about belief have begun to emerge, and short acts of worship on major festivals have been well received.
Organiser John Dale said the team had been “astonished” by the response. “We knew there was a need for something simple and welcoming, but we never expected it to grow like this. Watching people reconnect and grow in confidence has been one of the greatest joys of the project.”
The project was launched with a £750 New Beginnings Grant from the Sheffield Methodist District — £500 initially, followed by £250 after 12 months. John added “We simply couldn’t have started without it. It wasn’t just funding; it was encouragement to step out in faith and serve our community.”
Now widely known across the area and neighbouring congregations, 3C’s is preparing for its second year with hopes of expanding community involvement and shared responsibility.
John said: “The aim remains unchanged we are offering companionship, one cuppa at a time.”
3C’s takes place on the 1st Friday the month between 10am until 12 noon, all are welcome.
