Preparing for the Eclipse.

In three weeks we are expected to experience an Eclipse which will not be seen again until 2090.

On Wednesday 12th August many churches in our district are busily organising viewing parties for local communities to come together and share this phenomenon with one another.

To support these community celebrations, the district is offering grants of up to £500 to help churches organise activities and events. The most recent include Handsworth Woodhouse Methodist Church in Sheffield, Dinnington Methodist Church in Trinity Circuit, and Hemsworth Methodist Chapel in Barnsley.

At Handsworth Woodhouse, the church is teaming up with the Woodhouse Community Hub and the local library to provide family-friendly craft activities, refreshments, cakes, and drinks. Dinnington Methodist Church is planning an evening of community fun featuring a local musician, crafts, and a group walk to Pit Top, where everyone will gather to view the eclipse. Meanwhile, Hemsworth Methodist Chapel is working alongside Little Fishes soft play centre, which operates within part of the chapel building, to host a family-focused event with hot food and refreshments.

All three events will provide safe eclipse-viewing eyewear to make sure visitors can enjoy the spectacle responsibly. Organisers also hope the gatherings will create opportunities for conversation about the wonder of God’s creation and encourage people to share a unique experience with others rather than viewing it alone.
