Green Moor Scarecrow Competition

Green Moor Methodist Church in Sheffield celebrated success in the village scarecrow competition with a winning display reimagined from an earlier church project.

The congregation created John Wesley and his horse using life-size woven willow figures of Joseph, Mary and a donkey made several years ago. They were rediscovered in cellars and sheds, then cleaned and repaired with fresh willow kindly donated by their original creator, who still lives in the village.

The theme of this year’s Hunshelf Scarecrow Trail was ICONS! – Someone who inspires you! John Wesley fitted the theme perfectly and the horse was named Gospel from a recent children’s books.

The figures stood proudly on the corner of the chapel garden, overlooking the road and draw plenty of interest from passers-by. After withstanding a week of rain, storms, wind and blazing sunshine, the display was voted the public’s favourite choice.
