Eclipse parties are being planned at churches across the district to celebrate a rare celestial event this August.
On the evening of 12 August 2026, the UK will experience a near-total solar eclipse. The next eclipse of this scale visible from the UK will not occur until 2090, making this a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for many people.
To help communities mark the occasion, the district is offering grants of up to £500 to support local events. Congregations in Doncaster and Sheffield are already busy organising celebrations where local people can come together to enjoy the eclipse.
Cantley Methodist Church in Doncaster, along with Manor Church and Victoria Stafford Road Methodist Church in Sheffield, are planning a range of activities, including games, crafts, refreshments and opportunities for reflection on this natural phenomenon.
Local green spaces and church gardens will be opened as viewing areas, and a number of community organisations are also getting involved in the celebrations.
