Afternoon Tea on Woodhouse Cemetery

Afternoon Tea

Cups of tea and slices of cake are helping one community open gentle conversations about grief, bereavement and an encouragement to share memories.

At first, the idea might sound surprising – an afternoon tea in a cemetery! Yet at Woodhouse Cemetery on Stradbroke Road in the city, this thoughtful gathering has become a meaningful way of reaching people who are living with bereavement.

Now in its sixth event, the afternoon tea is organised by a local grief team made up of people from the community hub, local funeral directors and the Methodist Church. Together, they share a passion for caring for people who have been bereaved and for making sure no one feels unseen in their grief.

For many people, cemeteries are places of quiet routine, tending a grave, bringing flowers, pausing to remember. By offering tea, conversation and a welcoming presence in that space, the team is choosing to meet people where they already are.

Revd. Debora Marschner said: “We want people to know that their grief is seen, their stories matter, and there is someone willing to listen.

“The aim is not only to provide comfort, but also to help normalise conversations about death, dying and bereavement. These experiences are part of life, yet they are often left unspoken. Creating a gentle, informal opportunity to talk can help people feel less isolated and more able to share memories of those they love.”

The team also offers bereavement support groups, but they recognise that not everyone feels ready or able to attend a group. Afternoon tea in the cemetery offers another way to connect informally and compassionately.

Debroa added: “Bereavement touches every life, inside and outside the church. The more openly we can speak about loss, the better equipped we can become to care for one another through it.”

Could something similar happen in your local area? How might you care for bereaved people where you are?
