£22,000 boost helps churches go greener

Three churches across Sheffield and Rotherham are cutting carbon emissions, reducing energy bills and investing in a greener future thanks to £22,000 in Action for Hope grant funding from the district.

Aston Methodist Church in Rotherham received £3,000 towards energy-efficient LED lighting and an upgraded heating system that allows only occupied rooms to be heated. Bents Green Methodist Church secured £9,000 to help install solar panels, while Banner Cross Methodist Church received £10,000 to support improvements including insulation, improved glazing, draught-proofing, heat pumps and solar panels.

These improvements are set to save the churches thousands of pounds in heating bills, reducing consumption of mains power as well as caring for the environment.

Neil Harland, District Mission Enabler, said: “These grants mark an important milestone for our churches and highlights the district’s growing commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. We would urge other churches to consider how the Action for Hope grants can benefit them.”

The district’s Action for Hope grants offer up to £10,000 to churches that have achieved a Bronze Eco Church Award, helping congregations invest in practical projects that support the Methodist Church's commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions. As a district we are aiming to see 18 churches achieve Silver Eco Awards over the next few years.
