Connexional Candidates Committee

The Committee is meeting this week. Please hold all candidates in your prayers, including two from our region. May this step of the discernment process be one to provide them with answers and clarity about their sense of call in the Methodist Church.

Sad news

We were sorry to learn of the recent death of the Revd Richard (Dick) Jones. A former President of Conference (1988), he was also a minister in Sheffield in the 1960s. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, especially his daughter, Revd Nicola Jones, former minister in the Peak Circuit.

People Seeking Sanctuary:

The challenges facing refugees & how we can help them

The Ukraine crisis has highlighted the challenges facing refugees seeking sanctuary. In the first of two evening events (8pm on 30th March, then again on 6 April), guest speaker Dr Ibtisam Alfarah will share her inspirational story of life as a refugee. Her colleague Anna Aitken will then talk us through the practical things we can do to help those seeking sanctuary.
Attendance is free and open to anyone -- feel free to invite friends and family. No need to book.

Missional Property Update

Energy prices have become so unstable and vary so much, the best ways forward are changing daily, the situation was due to change as new energy became available from Hickley point C, these changes in the push for renewable has also driven these prices up. With recent events in the world also affecting supply this has further pushed up prices by almost 300%.

All of our buildings are likely to see a 100% increase in prices over the next 2 years as a best-case scenario and this was before more recent events. This moving forward will mean that we will all at least see a 100% price increase until you are on a more than 3 year fixed deal.

This is a worry and something that we will all have to deal with in the coming months and years, please do if this is a concern or you want to be able to plan contact me to discuss further.

Events

digital church – what have we learnt? What next?

29 March / 31 March

It's now 24 months since COVID locked the doors to our buildings. An explosion of digital experimentation followed. With few official experts and no training manual we each discovered different responses for our own contexts. As the world keeps turning, we now wrestle with how to balance needs of analogue church alongside digital possibilities.

Join us on the evenings of Tuesday 29 or Thursday 31 March on Zoom to take stock, build supportive networks, ask questions, and explore what would help each of us now. You can register here for either date

Whatever your role or how expert/amateur you define yourself we value your insight at these sessions – preachers, worship leaders, technicians, IT gurus, essayists, digital congregants, youtubers and TikTokers – Christ's avatar has many parts.

Walking with Micah

10 May 7-8:30pm / 17 May 2-3:30pm

Are you interested in shaping the future of a justice-seeking Methodist Church? Are you involved in chaplaincy?

As a chaplain, you have invaluable insights into the world the Methodist Church works with and as we look to the future of our justice-seeking work, we want to hear from you.

The Walking with Micah project is enabling conversations to listen to experiences of injustice and shape work in seeking a more just world.

We're asking questions like

  • What does a just world look like?
  • What are the biggest barriers preventing us from living in this just world?
  • What are the key steps we can take in moving towards this vision of a just world?

Join the conversation! https://walkingwithmicahforchaplains.eventbrite.co.uk/

PRAY

Holy and Gracious God
We pray for the people of Ukraine and the people of Russia; for their countries and their leaders.
We pray for all those who are afraid; that your everlasting arms hold them in this time of great fear.
We pray for all those who have the power over life and death; that they will choose for all people life, and life in all its fullness.
We pray for those who choose war; that they will remember that you direct your people to turn our swords into ploughshares and seek for peace.
We pray for leaders on the world stage; that they are inspired by the wisdom and courage of Christ.
Above all, Lord, today we pray for peace for Ukraine.
And we ask this in the name of your blessed Son.
Lord have mercy.
Amen
