A Methodist Way of Life

I am the Reverend Carla Quenet and I am a presbyter currently serving the Connexional team as part of the Learning Network in the Yorkshire Plus region. As a team we work primarily within the Sheffield, Yorkshire West and Yorkshire North and East districts. I am pleased to again reside within the Sheffield District – my home district.

As a Learning and Development Officer I am privileged to facilitate a broad variety of training and events, a role I feel called to and one which I love. One of the things I am extremely excited about is ‘A Methodist Way of Life’, but what is it?

A Methodist Way of Life, is a way of life that builds on Our Calling through inviting people, and if possible groups, to engage in what I regard to be life-giving and thought-provoking commitments and accountability questions, each desiring individuals to deepen their relationship with God and others. It is centred on the following commitments:

The calling of the Methodist Church is to respond to the gospel of God’s love in Christ and to live out its discipleship in worship and mission.

As far as we are able, with God’s help:

Worship

  • We will pray daily.
  • We will worship with others regularly.
  • We will look and listen for God in Scripture, and the world.

Learning and Caring

  • We will care for ourselves and those around us.
  • We will learn more about our faith.
  • We will practise hospitality and generosity.

Service

  • We will help people in our communities and beyond.
  • We will care for creation and all God’s gifts.
  • We will challenge injustice.

Evangelism

  • We will speak of the love of God.
  • We will live in a way that draws others to Jesus.
  • We will share our faith with others.

May we be a blessing within and beyond God’s Church, for the transformation of the world.

This way of life truly resonates with me because its very essence is about discipleship not rules, freedom not guilt, celebrating new life not necessarily the status quo and giving of our very best to God. I have noticed the way in which it can and does rekindle peoples’ faith, encourage a stepping out into action and enable deep exploration on matters of spirituality and life.

A Methodist Way of Life has organically grown in various places across the Connexion, catching the attention of lay and ordained people alike. Recognising this grass-root impact A Methodist Way of Life is having, the Connexion invited a group, of which I am glad to serve, to develop resources around it, including:

  • A brief guide to a Methodist Way of Life – a short accessible introductory booklet
  • Finding the Way (Revd Dr Roger Walton) – delving deeper into this way of life
  • Choosing a Methodist way of living’, The Connexion, issue 17

In 13 years of ordained ministry this is one of the most exciting and transformative opportunities I have had privilege to experience and contribute towards. Will A Methodist Way of Life be transformative for you?
