Holiday Club @ Home

Is your church looking for ways to engage digitally with families in your community this summer? Are local families missing your usual clubs?

We would like to present to you a potential missional opportunity that: is easy to access, low cost, requires minimal volunteers and doesn’t require premises or meeting face-to-face.

On the week of August 10th, many churches and communities across the district will be joining in a week of holiday club activities online. This is a resource that’s available for every church in the district to access, receive training on and deliver to their communities.

If you’d like to hear more about this missional opportunity then come along to hear more on Thursday 2nd July at 7pm. Book onto our Initial Information Evening by contacting Lauren Rossell on laurenadairrossell@gmail.com. She’ll be happy to provide you with more information.

Everyone an Evangelist – Even You

Monday 29 June | 14:00-15:30

Featuring Elaine Heath, Krish Kandiah, and Thelma Commey

All disciples of Jesus are called to listen for, speak of, and live out the good news from their own lived experience, theology, and perspective. While some have been given particular spiritual gifts for communicating the gospel, we are all called to witness to God’s goodness in word and deed. Responding to this calling does not require a personality transplant or the adoption of a theological stance with which we do not resonate. Being an evangelist means starting authentically from where we actually are.

How to be missional as we are exiting lockdown in the time of Covid-19?

Why not join a zoom webinar on Thursday 2nd July at 11.00 a.m. to explore this question in a conversation between Revd Leslie Newton, Chair of Yorkshire North and East District, Revd Gill Newton, Chair of Sheffield District and Michael Harvey, Director and Chief Executive of the National Weekend of Invitation, hosted by Revd Carla Quenet, Learning Network, Yorkshire Plus Region?

We are dispersed into our neighbourhoods and unable to physically gather in our buildings, but at the same time engaged in prayer and service in our communities. In this webinar we will consider a simple way for Christians to be in mission to touch lives and grow as followers of Jesus in the process, as well as developing relationships for the time when we are able to gather again.

This is filling up fast! To book your place and to obtain joining instructions, follow this link:

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

Job Vacancies

Youth and Children’s Outreach Worker

A post is available, initially for 3 years, at Emmanuel LEP Church, Waterthorpe, Sheffield, for someone to support and develop the current youth and children’s work through outreach into the community and working towards sustainability of these activities.

The position is for 22 hours per week, and the rate of pay is £12 per hour.

The core hours are to be agreed following appointment, but will include evenings and weekend work to create links with the established youth and children’s groups. Links have also already been made with 2 on-site schools, and these can be developed into community outreach.

The main focus of the job is reaching out to create community links that will build volunteer capacity in our youth activities as well as supporting these activities directly, and through leadership training. The person appointed will demonstrate Christian beliefs, and be qualified and experienced, with understanding of the needs of children and young people as well as those who lead this work.

The work will be mainly home based, as the Church does not have communications systems in the vestry/office space. Independence will be key, but there will be regular reporting to management team meetings that will include the Methodist District and URC Synod Youth Workers, and informal contact at the weekly church gatherings with a named church link person.

Emmanuel Church’s policies cover safeguarding procedures, H&S, etc and there will be appropriate induction. The post is subject to an enhanced DBS check.

Application packs are available from

Sheffield Methodist Circuit Office

Any further queries about the post should be addressed to the Church Secretary. Although the current circumstances may cause changes, it is planned that the closing date will be Wednesday 15th July, with interviews in the last week of July 2020. Applications should be submitted electronically

Update 23 June

The Government has today announced that places of worship may re-open from July 4 2020 for services. Our Property Team is working on what Managing Trustees will need to consider in order to re-open buildings and we will update our website as soon as is practicably possible.

We will also be releasing a special service to celebrate a return to public worship.

In the meantime you can see the updates on what steps Managing Trustees will need to take when considering whether to open church buildings here

Property guidance relating to Covid-19 including a Re-Opening a Building Checklist and a Covid-19 Risk Assessment. Both of these can be started now and will need to be followed in the event of any changes.

Methodist Women in Britain

  • We are asking each District to commit to praying for Carolyn for one month during her year in office, and the ‘rota’ for this is now available to download here: praying-for-the-vice-president/
  • The MWiB Fringe event has been cancelled, but there is still opportunity to share ‘Signs of Kingdom Growth’ from the Methodist Church in Britain and around the world. A selection of stories will be available to read and/or download each day of Conference (Thursday 25th June – Thursday 2nd July) on the Home page of the MWiB website: https://mwib.org.uk/

We are excited to announce that MWiB has entered into a one-year partnership with online worship resource producers Twelvebaskets, supporting them to continue to produce ‘The Vine at Home’, a downloadable weekly worship service. The resource will be available to download each Tuesday (for the following Sunday) from the MWiB website, beginning this week – Tuesday 23rd June (for Sunday 28th June): https://mwib.org.uk/index.php/2020/06/22/the-vine-at-home/

Please think of creative ways of using this resource; in particular you might consider printing and copying it, and delivering it to those who are unable to access it online for themselves, or perhaps share the worship with someone over the telephone. We’re looking forward to seeing this new venture develop, and would be happy to have your feedback.

Please note the following dates, to help planning your own District events and diaries:

  • MWiB Residential Weekend, Swanwick: Friday 16th – Sunday 18th April 2021
  • World Federation Day, Chippenham: Saturday 23rd October 2021 (NB: 2020 event cancelled)
