Radical Hospitality 14 September – you are invited!

An opportunity to gather with people from across our District to think about what it means for our churches to be truly hospitable and why we must be radical in this hospitality. We will be challenged, inspired and educated by the keynote speaker (to be advised) and worship with Matt Beckingham (Artistic Director OneSound, The Call Tour). After a free lunch, 30 members of local churches will share real life examples of how they extend radical hospitality to new people.

We hope and pray that everyone will go away inspired and equipped to offer radical hospitality from your churches to your communities. Maybe you will hear something and think “we could do that”; maybe you will have an idea of your own; maybe you will recall in fresh light invitations, encouragements and welcome extended to you by the community that is now your spiritual home.

Urgent Appeal for Volunteers

3Generate is the children and young people’s assembly of the Methodist church and as such is a very important event in our churches year. The event has grown over that last few years, which is great as more and more young people come forward to share their voice with the wider church. This year’s event is at Pontins Holiday Park in Southport and we have already sold 1000 tickets for the event. (November 22nd to 24th)

Volunteering at the event is seen by many volunteers as a privilege and many come away from the event amazed and blessed by the experience they have had working alongside the young people of our church.

We need more people to volunteer now, for a wide selection of roles. It often seems that November is a long way away, but we need people to commit right now before the summer break, for a variety of reasons, namely that we need to process your application, which often takes longer than you may think. Also that in September we are having a get together at Cliff college (28th September) for all team members, where they will able to share and learn together.

Please can we ask you to speak personally to people in your region and invite them to volunteer, there really is a role to suit everyone and age or experience should not be a barrier. Thank you.

Overseas mission

Overseas mission is a great way to grow your faith and experience a whole new culture!  It also strengthens and develops relationships within our Methodist family, both in Britain and around the world.

There are lots of ways you can get involved in global mission with the Methodist Church in Britain – Global Relationships People to People Poster shows you some of the ways on offer. Praying With Icons: An Introductory Workshop
22 July, 10am – 4pm. £18.
This day will open up the history of Christian iconography, looking at theology and artisrty through well-loved icons. Participants will be guided in using icons in meditation and prayer. Details and bookings here.

Contemplative Dialogue
28 July & 24 August, 930 – 10:15am. No charge
A non-threatening, ‘safe place’ for open sharing and discussion. The focus of this new gathering will be listening to ourselves and others, rather than formulating a response to what is being said. Follows on after our regular Space to Be meeting and will be facilitated by chaplain Joy Adams. No need to book – details here.

Resource Evening for Spiritual Accompaniers
31 July, 7 – 9pm. Donations welcome
The first of two events for all recognised Spiritual Accompaniers. Led by chaplain Joy Adams and including conversation, listening practice in triads with feedback and peer supervision. No charge – we suggest a donation of at least £5 to cover costs and ask that people book in advance,  here.

A simple day of silence, facilitated by Recognised Spiritual Accompaniers and limited to 10 places. Book here.

Every third Tuesday, Whirlow hosts a day of space to “be”; to relax, reflect, pray and renew your spiritual resources. The space will be as quiet as possible, honouring your quiet. Starts with our weekly communion service, also open to others.

Regional Retreat

12-14 November 2019

The next Yorkshire Plus Regional Retreat for Presbyters, Deacons and Lay Employees will be at Wydale Hall near Scarborough from Tuesday 12 to Thursday 14 November. The theme is “Deepening our Friendship with God”, led by Edel McClean.

The relationships that we cherish in our lives are always evolving and growing.  Sometimes those friendships are simply woven into the everyday and sometimes we need to make time to reconnect. This retreat offers the time to reconnect with God and God’s friendship. Taking an Ignatian approach we’ll have times of quiet prayer as well as time for reflection and discussion. Most of all we’ll seek to create an atmosphere where you can pay attention to God’s desire to welcome you into an ever-deepening friendship.

Retreat Cost: £200. Please contact your District Office to request funding support. You may also wish to seek support from your Circuit or local church

It is possible that if there are insufficient numbers booked by the deadline of 6 September, that this retreat may have to be cancelled, so please do not leave booking to the last minute.

Regional Lay Workers  Networking Day

Monday 7 October, 9:30-2:30 – Christ Church, Stocksbridge

After the successful Lay Workers Networking Day at Boston Spa in March, we’re looking to organise another day on Monday October 7th at Christ Church Stocksbridge(address above). The day will start at 9.30am for Tea’s, Coffee’s and conversations, followed by Introductions and Worship together at 10am. There is ample car parking at the Church for those coming by car, with the Church being 10-15 minutes from the M1 J36, and at the end of the Tram Route from Meadowhall or Sheffield Train Station.

Rachel McCallam from the Learning Network will be sharing with us at 10.30am around Appreciative Inquiry, before breaking for lunch at 12pm with a Buffet Lunch (thanks to the Learning Network for providing it). After lunch at 12.45pm, they’ll be opportunity for people from the same or similar Ministry areas to meet together in Communities of Practice to share their highs and lows; to bounce ideas off each other, and to help provide a support structure in what can be quite a lonely job at times.

The day will close at 2pm, although drinks will be available until 2.30pm for those who want to continue chatting.

The Revd Ashely Cooper will lead us through Paul’s letter to the Colossians (this year’s Bible month book) challenging us to make our beliefs an d lifestyles fit to face the experience of being a Christian today.

Cliff Retreats

Two ‘Holy Habits’ weekend retreats are planned for autumn 2019, and spring 2010, with 20 places available for each weekend.  We are encouraging folk to sign up for both weekends. I am delighted that Rev Andrew Roberts, author of the influential book ‘Holy Habits’ is to guide these weekends, which are part of a growing area of spiritual retreat here on site. The Holy Habits retreats are part of our on-going partnership with BRF (www.brf.org.uk).

Certificate in Theology & Mission

September 2019 – June 2020

The UTU Diploma in Theology and Mission was from 1972 to 1999 the pioneering programme that provided a unique experience of theological and vocational training, linked to the realities of the city, and developing new theological and biblical studies which influenced profoundly the several hundred who took the course, often through the famous UTU Study Years.

Now, twenty years later, we have revived the course to suit 21st century needs, and offer a new programme of Theology and Mission work.

Areas to be covered will include bible study, contemporary theology, personality temperaments, urban theology, liberation theology, discipleship, rule of life spirituality, public theology, social and political development.

The aim is to facilitate the development of each participant’s own personal theology and mission.

Cost: £200.00 includes £50 for books & resources supplied to all participants, also free use of premises and kitchen (tea, coffee & milk)
Plus £45 membership and library subscription if not a UTU member
