Sheffield District Safeguarding Conference

Saturday 16th March 2019 : 10.00 am – 3.30 pm

The Sheffield District Safeguarding Conference is to take place on Saturday 16th March 2019 at The Crossing Church and Centre, Newcastle Street, Worksop, S80 2AT. Registration and coffee will be from 9.30 am.  A buffet lunch will be provided.

The topics to be discussed are:


‘How do we support people with Mental Health problems?’

Keynote Speaker:
Andy Parnham,
Wellbeing Advisor, Coach and Trainer  –  Livability 

“Raising awareness of Mental Health in faith communities”

Workshops led by:

Andy Parnham:- Mental health from a theological perspective.

Tim Jansen:- Mental health and young people.

Sally Ross and Siobhan Hayes:- How can we help churches in supporting people with mental health issues?

Participants can sign up for two of the above workshops on arrival.


‘Developing our understanding of domestic abuse’

Led by Howard Smedley, District Safeguarding Officer

With the use of role play and case studies, a practical workshop in raising awareness of how to recognise and respond to those experiencing domestic abuse and consider its impact on all concerned. To include:

  • identifying the impact of children in the household by way of a real case study
  • how we change mind sets to be sensitive to all those affected, especially victims
  • identifying what our churches need to respond effectively in situations of domestic abuse.

Andy Parnham

Andy trained and worked as a medical doctor for some years, before spending thirty years in church leadership and community work in south London and abroad.

He now works as a life coach, both independently and with the charity Livability as a wellbeing trainer, coach and advisor.  Livability is a national disability charity based in the UK and is the country’s largest Christian disability charity

Tim Jansen

Tim is a Mental Health Nurse specialising in psychiatry and a Mental Health first aid instructor.

He is also a Chaplain in Mental Health for Sheffield Health and Social Care Trust, and a former Youth Worker for the Methodist Church.

Sally Ross

Sally is Chaplaincy Team Leader at Sheffield Health and Social Care Trust.

Siobhan Hayes

Siobhan is also a Chaplain working within the Trust.

Howard Smedley

Howard is the new District Safeguarding Officer for Sheffield District.  His background is in social care, children and adult services with extensive experience in mental health and domestic abuse, and more recently as an independent safeguarding consultant working with a wide range of statutory and voluntary agencies.  He currently is also the District Safeguarding Officer for the Lincolnshire District and is involved in a wide range of Connexional safeguarding work.
