One Mission forum – urgent request

Anne Dyer is unable to attend the annual One Mission forum on Saturday 6 October in London, and so we are looking for someone to represent our District this year. The forum is an excellent opportunity to share stories and practice of mission and evangelism throughout the UK, and of our relationship with Methodists and other partners across the globe. Speakers will include Trey Hall, our new Director of Evangelism. Contact the District Office (0114 270 9990) for further information.

Cargo – Fight for Freedom past and present

Monday 17th September & Tuesday 18th September

Cargo is a challenging production about the abolition of the slave trade in the 19th century, and the fact that slavery is still a stain on our world in which we are all concerned through the goods and services that we use.

The production is a moving account of the work of the early abolitionists, including specifically people in Sheffield.

It is an amalgam of acting, presentation, visual images, music and song.

Christ Church has often produced musicals and pantomimes, and is hoping that this production will attract people from all over the city.

Tickets are £5.

The show offers a bridge between contemporary life and Jesus’s birth, portraying the journey that the wise men took 2000 years ago, whilst drawing hilarious and poignant parallels with our own preparations for Christmas day.

Training and Learning Opportunities

Learning & Development Grants

Learning and developing ourselves, our churches, circuits and district are vital and intrinsic aspects of being active people of God. However, the Sheffield District Learning and Development group recognises that sometimes the cost of developing or attending such opportunities may be a deterrent or barrier.

We are therefore pleased to announce the District Learning and Development Fund, set up to support learning and development activities of Methodists in the Sheffield District.

Priority will be given to people who have no other learning and development grant entitlement, especially first time applicants, but applications from staff, including presbyters, will also be considered.

Learning and development funding can cover such things as resources for house groups or study groups; expenses for speakers from other parts of the country; costs of joining a workshop, course or activity or contributions to extended periods of study.

Grant application forms can be downloaded from the website here: Grants for Learning and Development Opportunities.

Samuel Chadwick Centre, Cliff College

The Samuel Chadwick Centre draws particular inspiration from the strong link that evangelist Samuel Chadwick made between the Spirit and mission. In fact, our strapline is: ‘Discerning the Holy Spirit in the Mission of the Church.’ We want to gather people – both academics and non-academics – who are interested in both the Wesleyan and the Pentecostal/Charismatic traditions and what we can discern of the work of the Spirit within those traditions. Events will range from academic conferences to short courses on renewal. Somewhere in between is the upcoming annual Samuel Chadwick Lecture, which this year will be given by Revd Canon Dr Howard Mellor.

The Centre is directed by Dr Ben Pugh, a Pentecostal layman, and Rev Dr George Bailey, a Methodist minister, both lecturers at Cliff College. We hope that anyone who longs to see the Spirit move again within Methodism will meet like-minded people at Chadwick Centre events, and find much to inspire and encourage.’

Stories for the Soul and Godly Play

Godly Play is an established yet innovative approach to Christian nurture. Although first developed for use with children, it also supports the spiritual well-being of adults, including older people in care settings – where it is more usefully named ‘Stories for the Soul’. This empowering method can be used in contexts such as intergenerational worship, schools, chaplaincy, children’s work on Sundays, youth groups, and adult small groups. www.godlyplay.uk/

An introductory day is being offered on Saturday 30 October in Sheffield.
