District News – 1 May 2018

This Week’s News

Thy Kingdom Come

The Methodist Church is encouraging engagement with Thy Kingdom Come, a global prayer movement “in which Christians pray that people would come to know Jesus”. Taking place between Ascension and Pentecost, this year Thy Kingdom Come falls between 10 and 20 May. You can listen to a range of reflections on this phrase, including a discussion between the Revd Canon Gareth Powell and the Archbishop of Canterbury about the early Methodist commitment to mission.

There are a number of resources to help churches and individuals engage with this including:

  • “Nine Days of Prayer: Waiting in Wonder” written by the Revd Michaela Youngson, Presidnet-Designate of the 2018-119 Methodist conference,
  • an A6 pocket sized Prayer Journal to guide you through the Thy Kingdom Come prayer movement. Use this journal to sketch and scribble your thoughts, prayers and any answers as you go through the eleven days
  • and a Methodist edition of Resources for Prayer and Worship

The District Office has ordered in more copies of these, so if you are interested in having some for your own church or personal use, please contact Katrin (admin@sheffieldmethodist.org)

Beacon Events

A very special event to celebrate Pentecost as part of Thy Kingdom Come.

This will be an all age party event with a multitude of activities (bouncy castles, circus acts, balloons, choirs, bands and prayer spaces). The Busoasis will be there with lots of youth activities. There will be ice creams and drinks on sale and worship will be led by Christian song-writer, Stuart Townend, and his band. There is even a cover to keep us dry should it rain!

At 15:30 there will be an act of worship for everyone led by Revd Dr Roger Walton and Vice President Jill Baker.

Bring a picnic and invite friends and neighbours to come with you. We can be confident that they will have a good time and experience Christian worship at its best!

This is a free event, but you will need to book via eventbrite: https://pentecost-party.eventbrite.co.uk

Tickets are going fast!

Cliff College Festival

The annual Festival takes place Friday 25 – Monday 28 May.

Theme – the theme for this years Festival  is Ablaze, and we will be looking at the work of the Holy Spirit. The theme Ablaze comes from a book written by Samuel Chadwick, former Principal of the college, called ‘The Way to Pentecost’, in which he said, Spirit filled souls are ablaze for God…  So our title is Ablaze, and we will be focussing on ‘Life in The Spirit’, and what the Spirit can do in our lives today.

For full details visit their website: http://www.cliffcollege.ac.uk/festival/

DYFerence – the Sheffield District Youth Forum will again be camping and taking part this year. Maybe we will see you there?!

Mission development news and support

Planning, fundraising and researching new projects can often be lonely, frustrating and intimidating. Often we labour alone, each repeating the discoveries and mistakes that others have already made. I am setting up two newsletters as a tool to help us share ideas and support:

Mission development support will include relevant funding opportunities and other practical matters

Mission development news will feature innovative and established ministries from within our District and beyond to spark ideas about what you may be able to do in your context

Please let me know if you would like to receive either or both of these mailings, or have something you would like to share. I expect to circulate them a couple of times each month.

CLC Bookshops – move to 2 Church Street

The sign might not last very long in the West Street window, so please, please tell your contacts and church friends where we have moved to. Very few of them receive our newsletters, so we thank you for getting the word out.

Yes, we’re open as usual: 9.00 – 5.30 Monday to Saturday!! You’ll find CLC just beside and left of the Cathedral as you look from the tramlines, as seen in the top photo.
Number 2 Church Street is a work in progress, so please be patient with us. Due to circumstances beyond the shop team’s control we don’t yet have a proper counter, the necessary topcoat painting will have to wait until the bookshelves are ready for being installed, etc…. but we are open. Our apologies for these lacks. The wait will be worth it!

At the time of writing we are still working hard in the West Street premises. We’ve had to remove everything (even the sink unit & water heater), put in a new fuseboard and electrics, renew some stud walls and fill hundreds of holes, screwheads and gaps in walls and ceilings. And the mission has had to spend a small fortune on white paint…

HUGE thanks to those of you who have been praying for us at this time and to the churches who’ve mentioned the relocation in the weekly notices.

Here are a few praise & prayer topics (but do ask for more at the counter!!):

Give thanks…

  • for God keeping these premises for us (the good location had been empty for about 18 months)
  • for the local volunteers and the CLC colleagues from other shops who gave of their time and skills, taking some pressure off the local shop team
  • for the speed of the move itself
  • for some great tradesmen – who just “happened” to be free at the right time for us
  • for customers’ words of encouragement for the new location

  • that the shop team quickly locates needed items from the boxes in the basement
  • that exisitng and new customers find us quickly and easily!!
  • for clarity of mind as we source and prepare the stock for two big conferences in May
  • for daily protection now that we are in a much more visible location
  • … and for opportunities to share the gospel as the Lord draws people into the shop
  • and finally, pray that we hand over the West Street premises on time (5pm Monday 30th) and with all needed work satisfactorily completed, thus avoiding the steep financial penalties that the owner could impose.

We look forward to welcoming you and your friends at number 2 Church Street. Do ask us how things are going, and thank you for holding the shop team, the stock and the premises in your prayers.
