District News – 9 August 2017

This Week’s News

Office News

The District Office will be closed for staff holidays from Tuesday 22 August to Wednesday 30 August. There will be no weekly mailing that week, so if you have any events etc please send details in as soon as possible (before next Tuesday!).

Synod

An early reminder that the next Representative Synod will be on Saturday 9 September at Cliff College in the Peak Circuit. The calling letter will be going out sometime next week. Most people should receive this via email, but we are aware that sometime this can fail to arrive for a variety of reasons. Please let the office know if you fail to get the papers.

DLT Secretary

Michael Sanderson, who has been the District Leadership Team Secretary since 2012, has decided it is time to step down from this role from September.

We are therefore seeking expressions of interest from anyone who feels that this might be the role for them. The Role Description can be downloaded here: DLT Secretary

Please pass this information on to anyone you feel might fit this role, and encourage them to contact the Chair of the District, Revd Gill Newton, if they wish to explore this further.

Inter-Faith Relations

Are you interested in exploring inter-faith relations?

The District Inter-Faith Adviser is Revd Gareth Jones. Gareth is always glad to hear of examples of inter-faith engagement from around the District, and would also be happy to help if you would like

  • to have a conversation about any aspect of inter-faith relations
  • to arrange a visit to a place of worship of another faith
  • someone from another faith tradition to come and speak at a meeting
  • to attend meetings, or be added to the mailing list, of any of the inter-faith bodies around the District

Gareth can be contacted at garethjones11@gmail.com or on 0114 250 8251.

Peveril Centre

Looking for a venue in the beautiful Peak District for a church day away, retreat, meeting etc.? The Peveril Centre, home of Castleton Methodist Church, is an excellent choice, with differing sizes of rooms, kitchen facilities, a warm welcome and a wonderful view.

To find out more, email us at enquiries@peverilcentre.com or visit our website: www.peverilcentre.com

The Peak Filling Station

In June we were challenged to consider where we were going, both individually and as a Filling Station, as an expression of Christianity in and to our community: the challenge “coincided” with the question we were asking ourselves.

The Peak Filling Station has been running for 4 years and had reached hundred across the Peak District and beyond.  But during the past few weeks several of the leadership team have asked to step down and several new folk have expressed an interest in becoming a part of a new leadership team, all of which is entirely healthy.

Therefore, I have agreed we should have a pause in our monthly meetings while the leadership team reforms and plans a new programme.  If you have programme suggestions to offer please let me know

I anticipate we will meet again commencing March 2018 with new ideas and a reinvigorated team, we should never fear pausing and asking God what he wants of us; for which I believe God will bless us. Thank you for your past involvement, we look forward to the future.

Movement Day UK is a historic 2 day gathering of church leaders as well as leaders and practitioners (emerging and established) from many areas of society who share a heart for the transformation of our towns and cities. The passion is to see our places transformed in every area of culture with such transformation being characterised by spiritual, cultural and social change and a joined-up approach.

WaterAid

Last year, during the worst drought to hit southern Africa in 35 years, Orine was only able to feed her family once a day. Her entire community, Moompo Village in Zambia, rely on a hand-dug well – when it dries up there isn’t enough water to drink, let alone to grow food for their families.

Will your church collect change to help make sure Orine and her children don’t face another dry season without food?

Water sources are becoming increasingly unreliable because of climate change. Installing sustainable technologies like deep boreholes ensure communities like Orine’s can have clean water even during a drought.
