DYFerence @ Cliff College Festival

I’d like to say a big THANK YOU to all the young people who camped in the DYFerence site at Festival this weekend. We are all really proud of the way you shared everything, and how tidy you left the site!

Thanks also must go to the planning crew and youth leaders – it wouldn’t have been possible without you all!

Sad News

Thank you for your prayers for John and Grace Vincent.

Grace was recently diagnosed with cancer and died at home on 25th May. John and her children were with her.

Grace has touched many lives in UTU and in the Ashram Christian Community for the last fifty years and has been a member at the heart of UTU since its beginning.

There will be a celebration and thanksgiving service for Grace’s life on Saturday June 3rd at 11 am at Pitsmoor Methodist Church, 131, Burngreave Rd, S3 9DG. The service will be followed by lunch. All are Welcome.

Tribute to Dr Mary Jefferson

The death of Dr. Mary Jefferson of Victoria Church Sheffield was received with great shock here in Sierra Leone especially with the Women’s Network MCSL, through which she had established firm ties.

Mary spent her later years working for the empowerment of women and girls in Sierra Leone. She contributed significantly towards the following;

  • Rehabilitation of the former skills training centre
  • Facilitating the purchase of a bus for the Women’s Network MCSL
  • Facilitating donations from the products abroad from which contributed significantly to the building of the present centre.
  • Facilitating funds from the GIBBS trust for the payment of workers of the centre.

We have resolved to name the newly built skills training centre the JEFFERSON’S CENTRE.

SADLY MISSED   by the Women’s Network MCSL

Whirlow Spirituality Centre – June Events

Whirlow’s Cairn

Many of you will be aware of the cairn in the centre of the lawn at Whirlow. This was initiated when Nick Helm was Chaplain at Whirlow over 15 years ago. From time to time we include the placing of stones on the cairn at the end of worship or other events as a marker of our meeting with God. We now have 2 containers (see picture above) from which individuals may choose a stone at any time to place on the cairn to mark a point in their journey with God.

We are really looking forward to welcoming Nick and Pat, his wife, back to Whirlow in June. On Friday evening, June 23rd, you are invited to an Evening with Nick and Pat – an informal gathering where we can catch up with them both – details here. He is also leading a 2 day retreat on the Saturday & Sunday 24th -25th June (only 3 places left).

Training and Learning Opportunities

Understanding Islam

What are we to make of the many stories we hear through the media about Islam and what its followers do and don’t believe?  At a time when a tiny minority of Muslims often hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons and many of our Muslim neighbours feel particularly vulnerable, it seems especially important to learn more about Islam.

Dr Chris Hewer comes from a background in Christian theology, education, Islamic studies and inter-faith studies and has worked in the field of Muslims in Great Britain and Christian-Muslim relations since 1986, first at the Centre for the Study of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations at Selly Oak in Birmingham and as the Advisor on Inter-Faith Relations to the Bishop of Birmingham. His current work is to teach study days and residential courses, to develop written and electronic resources and to be available for consultation.  He is an excellent communicator.

Chris is back in Sheffield early in July and will be leading his introductory day on Islam in 3 different venues across the District –

  •  St Peter’s Methodist Church, Green Lane, Dronfield on Saturday July 1st,
  • Stephen Hill Methodist Church,  Manchester Rd, S10 on Friday July 7th
  • Hoyland Methodist Church, Market Street, Hoyland, S74 9QR.

All these days run from 10.00 am  – 3.30 pm. There is no charge, although donations will be welcome on the day. Please bring a packed lunch. For further details and to book a place please contact Rev Liz Wills on 0114 2610732, e-mail: johnwills@callnetuk.com

(If Tuesday July 4th is a better day for you, Chris will be in Dinnington on this day, running a course hosted by the Roman Catholic Church. Contact Liz about this.)

Deep Talk is “an adaptation of Godly Play … to help work communities develop in creative ways” (Jerome Berryman). It takes a number of Godly Play principles and some Godly Play stories—along with some new stories—and adapts these for a spiritual process suitable to secular and religious settings, to help groups consider their organisation’s / workplace’s vision, mission, issues or challenges. This has been used in Finland in secular and church contexts usually with existing adult teams (such as a staff team).

CLC Bookshops

Huge sale of used & nearly new BIBLES and CHRISTIAN BOOKS and perhaps some DVDs and (old) vinyl….(didn’t they used to be called LPs back in the day…?)

Thanks to donations, we have more used resources at the bookshop than can be displayed…. So we’ve organised a special event at St Mary’s Church, Bramhall Lane, Sheffield S2 4QZ on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th June, from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Parking on site or nearby available. Food and drinks are available 10-2 on both days.

THANKS for making this event widely known among your friends and church family. If you read about it here, you are in the minority.
Come along and rediscover some jewels, find some new ones and stock up on titles you can give to others to help them in their spiritual growth!
The books will be displayed by category, with rare and “collectibles” on a separate table. This is an event not to be missed!!

Talking to young people about tragedy

Following Monday night’s terrible events in Manchester, these statements and prayers were issued by (among others) the President, Revd Dr Roger Walton, and Vice-President, Rachel Lampard, of Methodist Conference as well as Andrew Lunn, the Chair of the Manchester and Stockport District, and Tim Annan, Methodist Youth President. We continue to pray for all those affected by this awful tragedy.

You may have seen this excellent resource from CBBC Newsround, offering advice to children and young people who are worried following this and other acts of terrorism. Also from the BBC is this helpful article from the Scotland news desk, containing useful pointers for how to talk about these issues with young people.

This blog post is a simple session plan, entitled It’s Not the End of the World, for talking to, and praying with, young people when terrible events happen. This great resource was signposted to by the Child in the Midst mailing from the Church of England, which also included a link to the CofE Going for Growth website, which provides a list of places to go for help with issues such as bereavement and dealing with trauma.

Childline has compiled a page of advice and resources on a wide-range of issues related to terror attacks, including a message board for young people who are being bullied or harassed because of their Muslim faith, advice on dealing with anxiety and reassurances about how unlikely an individual is to be a victim of an attack such as the one in Manchester.

Bookings are still being taken for groups wanting to attend 3Generate Children’s and Youth Assembly, which will take place from 24th to 26th November 2017 at Pontins, Southport.

Interested in volunteering for the event? Find out how you go about applying for one of a variety of roles here.

Please help us to hear the voice of children and young people, especially regarding the issues they think should be discussed at this year’s 3Generate. Download the Big Session, which you can use with your groups to get them talking about the issues that matter to them. When you have run the session, we’d be really grateful if you could send your feedback to us!
