This Week’s News

Sundays in the Peak District.

After a wonderful day in the Peak District why not round it off with worship in a village church.  At Litton Methodist Church we normally worship at 6.00 pm during the summer.  You would be made most welcome.  If our service is not at the normal time we generally advertise special events in the Weekly Mailing.

Deep Down – A celebration of life in a South Yorkshire mining community

1-3 June – Emmanuel Methodist Church, Huddersfield Road, Barnsley S75 1DT

Inspired by the recollections and reminiscences of the residents of some of the former mining communities in and around Barnsley, Deep Down is a piece of community theatre, telling – in drama and song – the story of life in one such pit village, from the 1930s to the present day.

It is about the miners’ life, with its toil and its dangers, but also about the shared experience of the miners’ lives and the comradeship and humour which sees them all through.  And it is about the miners’ families – their wives and children – and the pleasures and privations of their lives, too.  But mostly, it is about that sense of belonging, of being rooted deep down in the very place where they live, which makes those pit villages into communities, somewhere which is as much a part of you as you are of it.

The play is presented as a joint venture between the Barnsley Methodist Circuit and the Exodus Project.

All proceeds from this presentation will go to support the work of the Exodus Project (www.theexodistproject.org.uk)  and  taking a group of young people to a summer camp, Soul Survivor.

Art and Soul

Wednesday 7 June – 1:30pm
Carterknowle Methodist Church, Edgedale Road, Sheffield S7 1BQ

The theme for this meeting will be ‘Changing Landscapes’

Different geographical landscapes become metaphors for the landscapes of our inner lives: deserts represent dry, barren times; mountains offer exhilaration of life at its highest; forests can be places where we lose our way or become confused, while rivers offer us a variety of metaphors.

You are invited to come and explore your inner landscapes. We will use silence and sound, visual displays and imagined vistas as ways of creatively connecting with our own soul journeys. As usual there will be a short introduction and then the time will be yours to explore several ‘landscaped areas’ in the chapel.
