Safe Recruitment

Recruiting safely to positions of responsibility and authority is an essential component of safeguarding children and vulnerable adults who are members of our churches or who use our premises.  With recent national policy changes about criminal record checks coming into force, the Methodist Church has produced new policy guidance about safe recruitment practice, and a shortened 10 step version has been prepared which is posted here: 10 steps

The policy changes have resulted in the church needing to clarify who will require a check now and in the future, and in some cases this will mean that some workers who previously had a CRB check will no longer require a new Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.  To help churches decide if a post is eligible for a check the following diagram has been prepared: CRB_Eligibility_Circles

Locally, and for convenience,  we have developed a short, simple guide that provides the basic information about how to go about recruiting safely to paid and voluntary positions, but it does not address the practice to be followed when a disclosure is returned with a blemish.  For details about how to address this eventuality, please consult the national policy guidance.
